More than 40 years ago, Inova Fairfax Hospital opened one of the first neonatal intensive care units in the nation. That early move established the hospital as a leader and innovator in the care of premature and critically ill infants, an arc that continues today. Inova Children’s Hospital is now home to the largest, most comprehensive subspecialty neonatal intensive care unit in the region. Philanthropy has helped our 108-bed, Level IV NICU maintain a level of excellence and care for high-risk infants requiring specialized care and observation. Our staff of more than 20 neonatologists, 10 neonatal nurse practitioners, scores of highly-trained nurses, technicians, as well as respiratory therapists, NICU dieticians and pharmacists round out our multidisciplinary team which treats an average of 1,100 premature and critically ill newborns each year.
