Education – BSN by 2020
Inova is requiring 80 percent of its approximately 5,000 nurses to hold or obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or higher by 2020. Philanthropy is one of the most important ways to ensure Inova nurses have access to professional development through scholarships. As Inova transitions from hospital-based care to an increased focus on population health, Inova’s nurses, and ultimately patients, will benefit from the skills taught in BSN programs. These skills include critical thinking, case management and leadership qualities that will prepare nurses to address the parameters of population health — namely wellness promotion, disease prevention and improved outcomes — as well as manage the delivery of patient-centered care. In addition, Inova nurses will gain enhanced competencies in health policy, system improvement, research, evidence-based practice, community and public health, and geriatrics.
